“It’s very good to believe. Thanks to the academy and to Sir Richard Attenborough for focusing the world’s attention on India,” Athiya said in an acceptance speech at the Academy Awards. In 2012, Athiya returned her Oscar to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to be safe.

In an interview with PTI, the experienced designer said he had no regrets about returning the award. “I have wanted this for a while. I want to thank the Academy for helping me out. Many Oscar winners have returned to keep their Oscars safe. It’s a tradition with the Academy,” he said.

The Athaya was worried for the safety of the trophy. He had previously donated a large collection of newspapers related to “Gandhi” to the academy. Recalling the moment his name was announced, Athiya claimed that he was also the frontrunner for the Best Costume Award, even though the nominees had told him.

“I was sitting in the audience with the other nominees in my section. They all said they didn’t stand a chance to win an Oscar. They said my canvas was big, so I would definitely win the award. In my mind, I did my best.

“When they called my name, I didn’t let them take me. I calmly went on stage and thanked Sir Richard and the Academy. When I went backstage, I was surprised that there were so many photographers taking pictures, but it was a great feeling. I was happy,” he explained.

The veteran, who has defined the beauty of Hindi cinema through his prolific work, has created some of Bollywood’s best memories, including “Vijayantimahla in” Amrapali “, Waheeda Rehman in” Guide “and Zeenat Aman in” Satyam Shivam Sundaram “.

One of the most respected names in cinema, Athiya worked with famous filmmakers like Yash Chopra. And has won two national titles in more than five decades – for the duration of Gulzar’s secret drama “Lekin” (1990) and “Lagan” directed by Ashutosh Gowariker (2001).

Things haven’t changed much since the Oscar win, he said in 2010. The costume department continued to be a neglected part of the Indian film industry.

“Costumes have a big role in making a movie look real and believable, but Indian filmmakers haven’t given it much importance and nowadays the trend is to just go abroad and put things together. In my opinion, it’s not the right thing to do. At the beginning of the book” The Art of Costume Design ” He said.
