Congress releases first list of Assam’s 40 candidates, these veterans get tickets

Congress on Saturday released the first list of 40 candidates for the Assam assembly elections, along with its state unit president Ripun Bora and opposition leader Debabrata Saikia in the assembly. According to the party’s list of candidates, Rajya Sabha member Bohra has been nominated from Gohpur, followed by Saikia, who is contesting from her current seat, Najeera.

In Assam, the Congress-led Mahajot (Mahagatbandhan) includes AIUDF, BPF, CPI-M, CPI and Zone Gan Morcha. Congress sources said the party would contest for 87 seats. Assam’s 126-member assembly is scheduled to start its three-phase election from March 27

Earlier today, Congress released the first list of 13 candidates for the West Bengal assembly elections. The party’s candidates include Nepal Mahato, a senior leader of the West Bengal Congress Committee, who will contest from his current seat, Baghmundi. The Congress is contesting elections in West Bengal along with the Left parties and the Indian Secular Front. According to the alliance agreement, this time Congress will contest 92 seats as of 2016.

West Bengal will go to the polls in eight phases. Voting will be held in various constituencies across the state on March 27, April 1, April 6, April 10, April 17, April 22, April 26 and April 29.
