According to the Times of India, the team’s management wants Prithvi Shah and Devadut Padikal to join the Test squad after Gill’s departure. But management has been denied the request because India already has a back-opener in Eshwaran. Shah and Padikkal are currently touring Sri Lanka for a limited-overs series. Former India Under-19 World Cup winner Gill has been a regular member of the Test squad since his debut in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia in 2020-21. He scored 36 in the WTC final. India will play a five-match Test series against England starting from August 4.
