India and England had a huge controversy over the DRS in the second Test at the M Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. The England team used the DRS after on-field umpire Ajinkya Rahane was described as not out, but third umpire Anil Chaudhury could not understand the English team’s appeal and called Rahane not out. When replays showed up on the big screen, it clearly showed that the ball went into the fielder’s hands after Rahane touched his gloves. Captain Joe Root complained to the on-field umpire and his review was returned to England as per ICC rules. Bowler Jack Leach, the victim of the incident, described the DRS as controversial and likened it to football’s VAR.
IND vs. ENG: Rohit Sharma reveals that the scheme was a success against England bowlers
Talking about the DRS controversy, Jack Leach said, ‘We got a third umpire to see the ball action, he was looking at LBW, we knew he wouldn’t stand out (LBW). We wanted him to look at the ball after hitting the pad. It feels like a little VAR (Video Assistant Referee) today, which is controversial, but it is. He said he was watching, he would see the catchout too but then he started looking at LBW, we wanted to see something different, but he didn’t see the thing. It’s something we can’t do anything about, but we’re disappointed. But in the next over, the wickets fell to ease.
Mohin threw Kohli clean, which was the reaction of the Indian captain
The incident took place in the 75th day of the day when Jack Leach’s ball went to forward short leg fielder Alli Pope and touched Rahane’s glove. England appealed but the on-field umpire turned it down and dismissed the criticism by claiming that the third umpire Choudhury thought the ball went outside the leg stump, but the visiting team appealed for a catch. England, however, have made it clear that they are appealing to catch the ball, not the bat, and the gloves.
