India needs more reforms – NITI Aayog

Amitabh Kant, chief executive officer (CEO) of NITI Aayog, said on Tuesday that there is “more democracy” in India, making it difficult to implement drastic reforms. He stressed that more reforms are needed to make the country competitive.

Speaking on the program via video conference, Kant said, for the first time, he has made drastic improvements in various sectors including mining, coal, labor and agriculture. Now states must take the next step forward. He said it would be very difficult to implement drastic reforms in the case of India. The reason for this is that democracy in India becomes too much. “You need the political will to continue these reforms (mining, coal, labor, agriculture), and many more,” he said. Kant said that this government has shown the political will to implement drastic reforms. It is not easy to compete with China without drastic reforms, he said.

The next round of reforms should be states

NITI Aayog’s CEO stressed that the next round of reforms should now be from the states. If 10-12 states increase at a higher rate, there is no reason for India not to grow at a higher rate, he said. We have asked the Union Territories to privatize the distribution companies. Distribution companies need to be more competitive and provide cheaper electricity. Responding to a question raised by farmers in Punjab and Haryana about the new agricultural laws, Kant said agriculture needs reform.
