Chennai Super Kings defeated Kolkata Knight Riders by 18 runs in the 15th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021. CSK took 220 for the first wicket, losing 3 wickets in 20 overs. For the team, Faf Duplessi scored an unbeaten 95 while Rituraj Gaikwad scored 64. Varun Chakraborty and Sunil Narayan took one wicket each for Kolkata. Chasing a massive 221, Pat Cummins (66 not out) and Andre Russell (54 not out) were all out for 202 despite a stormy innings. This is Chennai’s third win of the season.

Chasing a target of 221, Kolkata had a poor start and the team lost the first five wickets for just 31 runs. Shubman Gill (0) was dismissed in the first over of the innings, giving Deepak Chahar his Lungi MGD catch. After this, Nitish Rana (9) and Rahul Tripathi (8) could not do anything special. Stressed-out KKR skipper Ioan Morgan made just 7 runs and returned to the pavilion after catching Dhoni in Deepak Chahar’s delivery. After that, Andre Russell and Dinesh Karthik added 81 runs for the sixth wicket. Russell struck 54 off 22 balls. After dismissing Dinesh Karthik, Chennai were expected to win the match easily, but Pat Cummins came to the crease from the dressing room and poured boundaries and sixes. Cummins hit Sam Karan for 30 in the 16th over of the innings, and completed the half-century in just 23 balls. However, Cummins did not have the support of tail batsmen and after scoring 202 runs the entire team was out.

Earlier, Rituraj Gaikwad (64) and Faf Duplesse (not out 95) put on 115 runs for the first wicket as Chennai Super Kings lost the toss and batted first. Rituraj was dismissed by the emperor Varun. Duplessis then partnered Moin Ali (25) for 50 for the second wicket and kept the pace steady. Moin stumped Sunil Narine after hitting four and a six in the same over. Dhoni has promoted himself in this match and has dropped to fourth place. The CSK captain scored 17 off 8 balls and he looked in his old complexion. Ravindra Jadeja hit the last ball of the innings to take Chennai to 220.
