What is a Scrap Policy?
Under this new scrap policy, vehicles aged 15 and 20 will be canceled. Although commercial vehicle can be declared junk after 15 years, it is 20 years for private vehicle. Simply put, your 20 year old personal car is being trashed. Vehicle owners should take them to an automated fitness center after a set time. The government claims that the cancellation policy will not only reduce the financial loss of vehicle owners but also protect their lives. There will also be a reduction in road accidents.

Why was there a need to introduce a new scraping policy?
In response to this question, Giridhar Armane, senior IAS officer of the 1988 batch and secretary of the Andhra Pradesh cadre, counted many benefits. He said, “According to one statistic, a person loses 30 to 40 thousand rupees every year and a truck owner loses two to three lakh rupees annually to drive a used car. This economic loss is reduced by the scraping policy. Some have already been canceled. Apart from canceling the policy, only 15 to 20 lakh new vehicles will be sold in the next four years. I don’t consider this a big advantage for the auto industry.

Older vehicles can be dangerous
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways cited safety as the second most important reason for introducing a new scraping policy, saying 15- to 20-year-old vehicles do not have seat belts and airbags. Traveling in such vehicles is fatal. New vehicles follow more safety standards. Head injuries are also less frequent in accidents caused by new vehicles. Thus the idea is to motivate people to buy new vehicles by repealing 15- to 20-year-old vehicles, prompting states to impose a green tax on older vehicles.
