Sri Lankan spin legend Muttiah Muralitharan has denounced four senior national team players for a central contract dispute. Former captain Angelo Mathews and Kusal Perera and several other players have been involved in a long-running dispute with Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) over central contracts. Ahead of the England tour, several Sri Lankan cricketers refused to sign an agreement with the board over a pay dispute. However, he later agreed to play against England on a tour deal.

Sri Lankan players have not signed contracts in terms of transparency, but Muralidharan said that mainly senior cricketers would get lower pay in the new performance-based system. “I don’t think they need a central contract this year. We can pursue a tour-based deal,” Muralidharan told ‘Hiru TV’.

Cricketers have signed tour deals ahead of the India series starting July 18. Muralidharan, 49, who took 800 wickets in Test cricket, said senior cricketers were preventing other young players from signing contracts because of their pay cuts. Muralidharan said the players did not take it when the deal was given by the board. In such a situation, they will no longer get a central contract. This affects the country’s Test cricketers as they do not receive their monthly salary from the SLC and the team does not have to play any Test before November.
