The Supreme Court on Wednesday sought response from 11 sugarcane growing states, including Union and Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra, in a PIL hearing filed by a former MP for the payment of dues to sugarcane growers. PIL is seeking a payment procedure for farmers within 14 days of supply of sugarcane to sugar factories.

The bench of Chief Justice NV Raman and Justice Namurthy Suryakant observed the submissions of senior advocate Anand Grover on behalf of Raju Anna Shetty, former MP of Maharashtra Lok Sabha. According to the Uttar Pradesh Sugarcane Supply Act, sugarcane growers are required to pay their dues within 14 days and if the dues are not paid within the stipulated time. Besides the Union, Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra, the Supreme Court has issued notice to Punjab, Uttarakhand, Haryana, Gujarat, Bihar, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. It has sought comment from four sugarcane procurement companies: Bajaj Hindustan Sugar Limited, Indian Sugarmills Association, Cain Agro Energy (India) Limited and Indian Sucrose Limited.
Shetty, in his PIL, sought direction to set up a system of payment of sugarcane crop to prevent such pending increase and to prevent farmers from getting in a bad cycle.
