World Music Album category changed to Global Music Album in Grammy Awards

After extensive discussion, the Recording Academy has decided to change the World Music Album category to a Global Music Album.
According to Variety, the letter announcing the change of name states, “As we continue to embrace the true global mood, we will update our language to reflect the most appropriate classification that seeks to engage and celebrate the current range of music around the world. . ”
“Over the summer we had a discussion with artists, ethnographers and linguists from around the world who decided that there was an opportunity to update the World Music Album section towards a more current, modern and inclusive word.”
“As a result, a decision has been taken with the community to turn the World Music Album category into a Global Music Album.
“This shift symbolizes the departure from colonialism, folklore and‘ non-American ’meanings, as the former term fits into the current evolution of listening trends and cultural evolution in the diverse communities it may represent.
Global music continues to provide a home for influential music from all over the world, but also brings with it a new perspective promoted by visualization, diversity and direct inclusion in our process. ”
Variety reports that last spring, the Academy decided to stop using the word “Urban” in its awards and language, as well as upgrades to Best New Artist Class, Latin, R&B and Rap Fields. Nomination review committees, the Recording Academy will make the first Grammy Award rules and guidelines book publicly available
