World Veteran Abuse Awareness Day is worldwide today (World Senior Abuse Awareness Day) Being celebrated. This special day is celebrated around the world on June 15 every year with a view to preventing violence against the elderly and raising awareness of the public. The day was first celebrated as a result of the United Nations Resolution 66/127.
But for some time now, the epidemic of corona has made life difficult for the elderly around the world. This was revealed by HelpAge India, an NGO dedicated to the welfare of the elderly. On World Veterans Abuse Awareness Day, HelpAge India has released its six city survey report. This survey report foreshadows some of the toughest realities that older people are dealing with today, highlighting deep feelings of isolation and fear during corona. In addition, the home environment and the lives of older people living in old homes are also assessed.
In this report titled ‘The Silent Tarmanter: Kovid 19 and Seniors’, six cities were surveyed, including more than 3500 seniors reporting how the corona epidemic reduced their economic dependence on others. Their caregiver income is low. In addition, the report addresses the increasing abuse of the elderly, the shelter of the elderly, the shelter of the elderly and the struggle for survival.
According to the report, 58 percent of elderly family members were working from home in Corona. Despite being so close throughout the day, the elders wanted someone to be with them, someone to call them to talk. At this time, though very close to family, the elders are trapped and frustrated.
Another major concern of the elderly during this period is the growing financial dependence on others. About 40 percent of older people aged 80-89 depend on their family members for their expenses, the report said. They say their caregivers lost their jobs during this period or were unable to get the help they needed because of a pay cut. 50 percent of such people are women.
During this time, most seniors complained that they had been abused, revealing another painful secret. Although many were verbally abused by their family members, 23 percent were slapped or beaten. Half of the abusers were sons of elders, and in a quarter of cases, their niece was involved in such reactions. Fewer than 15 per cent of seniors said that females also behaved inappropriately.
“Today we are living in this reality. Corona has played the primary role of abusers. It affects the elderly from all sides,” said Dr. Imtiaz Ahmed, Head of Mission at HelpAge India.
