Actor Kavita Kaushik has finally decided to take on the popular show this year after rejecting Big Boss’s former asons. He entered the fray with wild card contenders Naina Singh and Shardul Pandit on Sunday night.
Prior to entering Bigg Boss 14, Frantic Kavita spoke to The Indian News Live about what she brings to the table, how to deal with controversies, how her husband Ronit Biswas encouraged her to take on the show, and host Salman Khan and his family. Excerpt:
Q. What caused you to take on Bigg Boss 14?
A. 2020! The whole country has become a Bigg Boss house where we are all locked up. We cook for ourselves and do household chores. There is also social media, which is good, but also an invasion of space and privacy. If this sounds like an opinion, there are all sorts of reactions, both good and bad. Some people try to pull you down by saying bad things. If a woman is talking about unity, love, peace and harmony in the country, the troll army will come out and try and assassinate her. We are fighting these social media trolls anyway. I think Bigg Boss is more of a saint than that. At least, in Bigg Boss, we can put our stuff in the house or fight it. How are you going to fight these faceless monsters? All these things made me say yes to the show this time.
Q. What is your survival strategy?
Ex. I don’t believe in over-planning. I know my weaknesses. I’m not so smart or calculative. I’m not even a groom. Other girls, like my contemporaries or even those who came after me, are well-groomed and smart, they know how to keep to themselves. I am very desi, I am ganv ki ladki (village girl). I show myself and my true personality. How to live is not in my hands. It is in the hands of the channel and the audience. Even survival in life is not in your hands. You never know, you can get a heart attack anytime! It is not in my nature to plan too much. The only thing on my mind is that I’m going to have fun. I’m not desperate to be home, I’m just going for fun. I have a wonderful life outside. It’s my cocoon, but Touchwood, it’s a safe place. Toh isa nahi hi ki jo bhi ho jaye, mar mar k rehna hai (so it’s not like what happens, I’m going through hell to stay inside). I know it’s a game, I’m going to play well. I try to make sure people are entertained the way I am. Although I fought, it must be interesting and fun, not full of dirty and cuss words. This is my idea. The channel and the voting audience will decide how I will survive. My job is to have fun and be happy.
Q. From what you saw, who do you see as your biggest competitor?
Ex. This is not my strategy. I don’t think anyone is my competitor. I am agile enough to know how it looks from the outside is deceptive. The vibe and energy inside are completely different. I’ve also seen many of the Big Boss asons, so I know your competition can change overnight. It is very silly to formulate preconceived ideas and go home with a frame of mind. I have been tough in the past and have been told not to perform for so many years. I don’t want to be tough anymore. I want to go with a clean slate and see what’s thrown at me.
Q. What aspect of your personality do you hope to see through the show?
Ex. I want to come across as real and entertaining, show my culinary talent. I also want to be surprised. As a man, I believe that there are many emotions besides anger and struggle. We plan to show other emotions because we have seen matches and everyone is funny to watch, but if there is a fight all the time, it can be very boring. No matter what kind of person I am, the roles I do, I always call her a person of diversity, so I think the show can provide that diversity as well.
Q. How do you think other contestants perceive your absurd attitude? Do you think this leads to conflict?
Ex. Each action has an equal and opposite reaction. I don’t like the hassle. I think violence is a great form of weakness. I know this by now but there was a time when I was very angry and the little things would put me off. But then I realized that it was my weakness and I worked on it. I did a lot of yoga, read scriptures. I worked on myself for my own betterment. I have learned from my mistakes and am very happy with what kind of person I am in life. I think I will add happiness to the house. I’m not thinking about who my competition is or how someone takes my strong self. If someone is strong on the inside, I hope they will appreciate the power I bring and not feel insecure. I think Rubina Dilek is really good. If you ask me who I am, I like Rubina because she shows strength. Why is it necessary for two powerful men to clash? They may complement each other!
Q. Which former Bigg Boss contestants do you really admire?
Ex. I think Shehnaz Gill is very neat and well played. She knew she was charming and she used her charm well throughout the show to get into the hearts of the audience. I think we can all learn from her. She has so much charm, even after she pulled Salman a few times, we still liked her. Gameplan is very important to know your plus points.

Q. Bigg Boss contestants have a personal life in general, and controversies on national television are on the rise. Do you care about that?
A. No, y’all. We live in a world where people are somehow digging stuff, making videos and not talking about people. They are saying things that are not true, so drop them. If a controversy or something comes out in the truth, I have nothing to hide. I don’t care or answer anyone. I know my husband is my best friend, I know he is my backbone. I don’t give a damn about anyone else. Talk about any of my issues, and I’ll say, ‘Yeah, I’ve done that. So? Big deal! ‘
Q. Is your husband the one who encouraged you to take on Bigg Boss 14?
A. In fact, they did. We discussed it this year and they like the show. I am very tough but he is more relaxed. I am a good person to be with. I am calm and very clear on things. My raw spirits were going here and there. They really channel my energy into my love. He told me it was fun. He was convinced that this was the number one show and it would open up so many different avenues. I have been working for 18 years and when you have a career that continues to this day, you sometimes need a project that will give you another boost and give your career a good buzz again. He explained these things to me. And let me tell you, as a small child, they are very excited for me to win the trophy. ‘Please win the trophy,’ he told me. Whatever you say, I’ll do, I’ll roll the red carpet for you, I’ll take you wherever you want. I want to see you win. ‘He comes from a very humble background and victory makes him the happiest person on earth. I want to do this for him and for me, of course, but this will be the best day of his life.
Q. It is reported that you have a close relationship with Salman Khan. Is this true
Ex. I wouldn’t call it a close relationship, no. FIR has seen Salman and his family including Sohail Khan, Arbaaz Khan, Salim (Khan) uncle and Helen Aunty. Salim’s uncle invited me to lunch and he said ‘we really enjoy your show’. He was very kind to me by organizing a feast for me because he loved the show. I have a little equation, you might say. I am so grateful for this beautiful gesture that made a simple artist feel like a queen. Other than that, there is no friendship or anything. I want to, but no.
