The government has banned 296 mobile apps since 2014 in the interest of the country’s sovereignty, security and public order, Union Minister Sanjay Dhotre told the Rajya Sabha on Thursday. In a written reply, the Minister of State for Electronics and IT said, “Under Section 69A of the IT Act 2000 and its rules … In the interest of the sovereignty and integrity of India, the state has banned 296 mobile applications since 2014 for the state’s security and public order.

The Minister said that the Ministry of Home Affairs, which has requested to ban these applications under Section 69A of the IT Act, has received several reports of misuse of some Chinese mobile apps available on the Android and iOS platforms ”.

He said there have been numerous reports on some of these applications for financial data, such as stealing and transmitting user data, accessing all available data on the device, and real-time activity for servers. “It has serious implications for national security and the current tense border situation,” he said.

Dhotre said that the large number of people using these apps in India will enable the compilation of vast data that is detrimental to India’s sovereignty and integrity and is detrimental to national security.
