Since last year, the Government of India has been accelerating the provision of Wi-Fi at trains and railway stations. After providing Wi-Fi connectivity at all railway stations in India, the government has announced that it will offer free Wi-Fi on trains running across the country. Former Railway Minister Piyush Goyal announced this ambitious project in 2019. At the time, it was announced that the center was planning to offer Wi-Fi on trains in four and a half years. This presents a number of challenges because it requires investment in towers and equipment, which are installed on and off trains. There was also a need for foreign investors for this.

Passengers on the train do not get Wi-Fi service
Two years after this announcement, you say that the project was either removed by the Indian Railways or abandoned. According to a PTI report, the plan to provide internet connectivity on railway trains was abandoned because the cost was not cost effective. The government confirmed this in parliament on Wednesday. In a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said that under the pilot project, the government has provided Wi-Fi internet facility through satellite communication technology on Howrah Capital Express train. During the pilot project, it has been noted that the technology requires intense capital and recurring costs, such as bandwidth charges, which do not make the project cost-effective. Also, Internet bandwidth provided to commuters on the train was not enough. The Railway Minister said there is no suitable, cost-effective technology for Wi-Fi Internet services in trains.
Rail Tell Network
Indian Railways currently provides Wi-Fi Internet facility at over 6,000 railway stations. The service is provided by the PSU Rail Tell Network, which operates under the Ministry of Railways. Railways provides Wi-Fi services through its broadband distribution model, RailWare. Prior to that, Google’s station program started at Mumbai’s Central Railway Station in 2016 and added its 400th station in Dibrugarh, Assam in 2018.
