Chamoli accident: Scientists warned 8 months ago that today a glacier has broken into a disaster

The destruction of the glacier in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand has hurt. The system from state to central government is involved in relief and defense. The first attempt of all is to reduce the loss of lives and property. The NDRF, ITBP and Air Force teams are constantly working. Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat has reached the Tapovan area of Chamoli district and is taking information on the current situation. So far, three bodies have been recovered from the NTPC site by the ITBP, with 100-150 people worried. It is important to note here that geologists warned of such a disaster about 8 months ago. Had there been action at that time, perhaps we could have saved people from today’s event.

Scientists from the Wadia Geological Institute in Dehradun conducted a study in June-July last year, warning that the lake could create runoff and glaciers in the entire Himalayan region, including Karakoram in Jammu and Kashmir. Has been released.

In 2019, scientists released a report on satellite imagery, digital models, British-era records, field studies on the ice dam, research on the diversity of outflow and glacier movement, and the flow of rivers from glaciers. Area. During this period, a total of 146 lake outbreaks were detected and analyzed. Research has found that glaciers in almost all the valleys in the Himalayan region are melting rapidly.

At the same time, some glaciers in the Karakoram region are increasing the amount of snow with POK. For this reason, these glaciers are blocking the course of rivers at specific intervals. In the process, the ice in the upper part of the glacier moves rapidly toward the bottom of the glacier (snout-snout).

Chong Kumdan blocked the river several times in the 1920s, in the glaciers of the Kumdan Group, which is located on the Shiok River in India. This led to several incidents of lake breakage at the time. In 2020, the Kaggar, Khurdopin and Sisapar glaciers created a lake to block the Karakoram rivers. As these lakes suddenly burst, there has been considerable loss of life in the POK, including India.

This research was supported by Dr. Rakesh Bhambari, Dr. Amit Kumar, Dr. Prepared by Akshay Verma and Dr. Samir Tiwari. This research paper by scientists has been published in the international journal Global and Planetary Change. Renowned geographer Prof. Kenneth Hewitt also contributed to this research paper.
