Congress veteran M Veerappa Moily, who separated himself from the ‘G-23′ leaders’ meeting in Jammu, expressed support for Rahul Gandhi’s re-election as chief of the party, expressing concern over internal differences within the party. Moily, referring to a rally in Jammu on Saturday by some G-23 leaders to honor Ghulam Nabi Azad’s retirement from the Rajya Sabha, said it was wrong to define it as ‘dissidents’. “This is not a meeting of dissidents,” he told news agency PTI. Expressing discontent with the public, leaders like Azad, Anand Sharma and Kapil Sibal came to a forum in Jammu on Saturday and said that the party is weakening and they have come together to strengthen it.
Moily, who is also the chief minister of Karnataka, said the letter, sent in August, was aimed at improving the party, effective reforms at all levels and organizational elections. “It is not contrary to the leadership of Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi. We are with the leadership. We are with the Congress. We are not opposed to becoming their president,” he said. Congress chief Sonia Gandhi has promised to change the organization and hold elections.
Asked if he had any regrets about signing the letter in August, he said, “I don’t think we will regret it.” Moily said, “We should not proceed (with our letter). He (G-23) did not intend to be dissatisfied with the organization and it will not be. After giving the memo, the purpose is served. Gone.”
The senior leader said that rebuilding the party is a continuous and daily process. This is not a one-time activity. In that sense (the August letter) said the purpose had been fulfilled. Commenting on the growing demand for Rahul Gandhi to be president again, Moily said, “We want him to step down again because Soniaji’s health is not good.”
He said Rahul Gandhi was already active in the area and was traveling around the country, going everywhere. Former Union Minister Rahul Gandhi said he could return as party chief through the electoral process.
