Delhi court convicts former Union minister Dilip Ray in coal scam case

In 1999, Rouse Avenue Court of Delhi convicted former Union Minister Dilip Ray in a coal scam case related to alleged irregularities in allocation of Jharkhand coal block. The court also convicted two then senior officials of the Ministry of Coal, Pradeep Kumar Banerjee and Nitya Nand Gautam, Castron Technologies Limited (CTL), its directors Mahendra Kumar Aggarwal and Castron Mining Limited (CML). On October 14, the court will hear arguments regarding sentencing. The case relates to the allocation of ‘Brahmadih Coal Block’ in Giridih, Jharkhand in 1999.

In April 2017, a special CBI court, along with Ray, two senior executives Pradeep Kumar Banerjee and Nityananda Gautam, as well as Castron Technologies Ltd, and its director Mahendra Kumar Aggarwal, were accused of fraud, criminal conspiracy and breach of trust. The charge was fixed.

The court had then said that there was enough evidence to initiate a case against the accused. Dilip Ray was the Minister of State for Coal in the Atal Bihari government while Pradeep Kumar Banerjee was Additional Secretary and Project Advisor in the Ministry of Coal. The accused then pleaded to start the case, claiming that they were innocent, after which the charges were framed.
