Delhi riot: Police leak notice on Omar Khalid’s charge sheet

In a riot case in Northeast Delhi, the court has asked Delhi police to find each accused or his lawyer in a supplementary chargesheet filed against former student leader of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), Omar Khalid. How did it leak to the media?

Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Dinesh Kumar directed the Delhi police to report to the media on January 14 how the leak had been leaked to the media before the court took cognizance of the charge sheet.

Omar Khalid’s petition said that the allegations in the supplementary chargesheet and the revelations made by him in the media compromised his right to a false, malicious and impartial inquiry. He had previously accused the media of carrying out a malicious campaign against him and had requested the court to direct the police how they or their attorneys received the charge sheet before receiving it.

Delhi Riots: Tahir and Khalid’s Nexus Reveals Large Chargesheet

During the hearing, Omar Khalid said that, as I said earlier, the charge sheet was made public before it was made available to me and the media was making news on it. The statement I made was mentioned in the charge sheet and based on that statement, the media reported that I accepted my role.

When I received the charge sheet, Khalid said, “My statement refusing to sign is written below.” Despite this it was leaked and then such news was made. This is not the first time this has happened before. In a professional way, something comes out in public and then comes to court. I don’t expect the police to do this one last time. The same has happened in other cases. My only hope is to see this happen again.

The court heard the list from the police

Khalid said some of the videos he did not make were mentioned on the charge sheet. A list of all documents to be presented to the court at the next hearing date has not yet been made available. The court asked the investigating officer to provide details about the video and explain why they were not made available to the accused. Khalid was arrested last October for inciting a riot with fellow accused Tahir Hussain and a Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) councilor has been suspended in Khajuri Khas area.

Communal violence took place in Northeast Delhi on February 24 after clashes between supporters and protesters of the Revised Citizenship (Amendment) Act. At least 53 people have been killed during this period, and about 200 have been injured.
