Free admission under 25 per cent reservation in private schools: Poor students can apply from today

The Tamil Nadu School Education Department has announced that the poorest students with an annual income of less than Rs 2 lakh can apply for free admission in private schools under the 25 per cent reservation from today. According to a press release issued by the Tamil Nadu School Education Department, under the Right to Free and Compulsory Education Act, poor children will be enrolled in 25 percent of places in non-minority private schools free of charge. Students enrolled for free in LKG or Class I under the scheme are advised not to pay fees till Class VIII. There are about 1.12 lakh seats in more than 10 thousand private schools in Tamil Nadu.

The report also states that the online application registration for the current student admission will take place from August 26 to September 10. Parents can apply from home through the School Education website, and arrangements can be made to apply online at the Primary Education Office, District Education Offices, Regional Education Offices, and Regional Resource Offices for Education for All. At the time of application, the applicant should submit a photograph, birth certificate or birth certificate, proof of location, proof of income, a copy of the permanent documents given to the concerned officer and caste certificate along with the applicant seeking priority of the category whose income is less than Rs 2 lakh per annum.

Admission is free to all private nursery, primary, matric and CBSE schools which do not have minority status under the scheme. Only those who have been denied the opportunity and those who are economically weaker can apply. Parents can apply at 5 schools near their location. Applications from the underprivileged, HIV positive, third gender, disabled, and cleaning workers’ children will be selected on a first-come, first-served basis. Similarly, the list of private schools and the number of seats in them have been published on the website.
