A three-member SIT headed by Secretary Home Bhagwan Swaroop to investigate the Hathras gang rape case will not submit its report today. CM Yogi Adityanath has given the SIT a further 10 days to investigate. Awasthi of UP Additional Chief Secretary (Home Department) Avnish said that after the orders of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the time has been extended by 10 days to submit his report to the Special Investigation Team (SIT).

Sources say that during the course of its investigation, the SIT has closed the statements of more than 100 people. It includes statements of the accused, police and administration officials besides the victim’s family. Action can also be recommended against some more officers in this case. At the same time, five police personnel including SP, CO of Hathras were suspended by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath after the SIT submitted the initial report.

Investigation has been handed over to CBI
All four accused have been arrested in the Hathras incident. The UP government constituted a three-member SIT and ordered an inquiry into the victim’s family and opposition allegations. But questions were being raised about the action of the government and the police regarding this scandal, after which the UP government on Monday transferred the case to the CBI.

Rakhi Birlan attacks UP government
After returning from Hathras, Aam Aadmi Party MLA Rakhi Birlan alleged during a media interaction on Tuesday that the Yogi government was protecting the accused in Hathras. The voice of the opposition is being suppressed.

Significantly, on September 14, a 19-year-old Dalit girl was allegedly gang-raped by four boys in a village in Hathras district. The girl later died on 29 September at Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi. Soon after the death, the police cremated at night in a hurry, after which a lot of ruckus occurred. The family says that the police cremated the victim on his own free will, while the police rejected these claims.
