The first match of the five-match Test series between India and England is being played at Nottingham’s Trent Bridge. Jaspreet Bumrah regained his lost momentum in the first Test and Mohammed Shami showed his bowling talent. Batting after that, India scored 21 without any wickets till the end of the first day. Openers Rohit Sharma (9 not out off 40 balls) and KL Rahul (9 not out off 39 balls) batted for 13 overs to keep the team afloat.

After winning the toss, England opted to bat and were once again 138 for 3, but then lost their last seven wickets by 45 runs. For them, skipper Joe Root scored 64 off 108 balls with 11 fours. In the World Test Championship final, Bumrah showed his speed and took 46 wickets. The other three fast bowlers, Shami (3 for 28), Shardul Thakur (2 for 41) and Mohammad Siraj (1 for 48) were well supported. Rohit and Rahul were very cautious and did not take any risk. There was no sharpness in England’s bowling. In the last over of the day, Oli Robinson made a credible LBW appeal against Rahul. England also lost criticism on this.

England lost two wickets in the first two sessions but in the third session their innings were torn as a card pack. Sam Karen added 27 not out but the other batsmen had no answer from the Indian bowlers. England were 61 for two at lunch, and openers Rory Burns (zero) and Jack Crowley (27 off 68 balls) lost the wickets. In the second session, Dom Sibley (18 off 70 balls) and Johnny Bairstow (29 off 71 balls) returned to the pavilion. Root and Byerstow combined for 72 for the fourth wicket. Indian bowlers took full advantage of cloud cover and swing. Bumrah gave India a good start. He dismissed Burns LBW on the fifth delivery. After three outwingers, Bumrah put the ball into the leg-stump, put it on the burns pad and, on request, lifted the umpire’s finger. The batsman took DRS but to no avail.

IND vs ENG: Joe Root made history by overtaking Alastair Cook

Siraj got his second wicket for India. His ball reached wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant’s glove with the lighter edge of Crowley’s bat but the umpire refused. At Pant’s suggestion, Kohli took the criticism, which became clear that the ball had taken the edge off the bat. India had previously lost criticism in this over. Shamiya’s bowling was amazing. He pitched Rahul in midwicket in the second session and then prompted Sibyl to flick. The batsmen got into their trap and Rahul took a simple catch. Sibley’s shot was out of control. The Indians bowled tight but Root used it whenever he could get a run. He showed patience and waited for loose balls. In the meantime, he made some spectacular shots and completed his 50th Test half-century.

The story changed drastically in the third session. It started with a wicket by Biersto, out by Shami before the tea break. DRS decision in India was correct then. Shami completed his over in the third session, with Dan Lawrence (zero) catching the pant on the last delivery. Jose Butler was in the crease for 18 balls but in the meantime he was struggling to get a shot. In this case, the ball taking the bumrah angle hit his bat and was caught in the gloves of the pant. Butler did not open the account.

Shardul was a huge success for Root on a full length ball to Root via LBW. He dismissed new batsman Ollie Robinson in the same overture that Shami Catch practiced. Bumrah sent Stuart Broad (four) and James Anderson (one) to the pavilion. India retain Shardul as the fourth fastest bowler to strengthen their batting, but Siraj Form saw him in the side. Ravindra Jadeja is the only spinner in the team.
