Hockey India has announced the 16-member Indian Men’s Hockey Team for the Tokyo Olympic Games 2020 starting next month, with ten players playing their first Olympics. Hockey India announced on Friday that a team of 10 players will make their debut at the Olympic Games. At the National Camp at the Sports Authority of India (SAI) Center in Bangalore, the team has been given intensive training and preparation based on a new approach.
Veteran goalkeeper PR Srijesh and midfielder Manpreet Singh have been re-elected to their third term in the team. In addition, he has plenty of experience with other Olympic players like Harmanpreet Singh, Rupinder Pal Singh, Surender Kumar and Mandeep Singh. After missing out on the 2016 Olympics due to a serious knee injury, Birendra Lacra had a good chance to join the team at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. The squad also includes Amit Rohidas, Hardik Singh, Vivek Sagar Prasad, Neelakant Sharma, Sumit and young forward Shamsher Singh, Dilpreet Singh, Gurjant Singh and Lalit Kumar Upadhyaya.
The Indian men’s hockey team has a rich history at the Olympics. The team has won 11 Olympic medals, including 8 gold, one silver and two bronze medals, however, it has been 41 years since India last won the Olympic medal, so the current Indian men’s hockey team is in Tokyo for a new chapter in the pages of history. The current team has won the 2016 and 2018 Asian Champions Trophy, the 2017 Asia Cup and the 2019 World Series. The men’s team toured Europe and Argentina this year as part of their preparations for the Olympics. The Indian men’s team has been placed in Pool A with the defending Olympic champions Argentina, Australia, New Zealand, Spain and host Japan for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo from July 23 to August 5.
