There have been 27 matches played between the two in the IPL and two in the Champions League. The Mumbai Indians have won twice in the Champions League, while the Mumbai Indians have won 17 matches in the IPL and 10 in the RCB. This is the third match between the two teams at MA Chidambaram Stadium. Both teams have clashed twice on the field before and both have won one match each.

In 2008 and 2009, the two teams played two matches and won one. A total of three matches have been played between the two sides in the 2010 IPL, with two matches being won by Mumbai Indians and one by RCB. Following this, two matches were played between the two teams in 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015, in which they each won one match. There were two matches between Mumbai Indians and RCB in the 2016 and 2017 IPL, but this time Mumbai Indians have won all four matches. In 2018 there are two matches between the two teams and both teams won one match each.

If the Mumbai Indians have won both the matches in the 2019 IPL, there will be two matches between the two teams last year, one of which was won by the Mumbai Indians and one by the RCB. Head-to-head, the Mumbai Indians are far ahead of the RCB. It remains to be seen whether the Mumbai Indians will overtake RCB in head-to-head in 2021 or whether the RCB will be able to narrow the gap.
