Barcelona’s star footballer Lionel Messi has been banned by the Spanish Football Federation for two matches for defeating an opponent in the Spanish Super Cup final. After the team’s 3–2 defeat, Messi hit Atletico Bilbao’s player’s head.
Sunday’s match drew extra time, where during the last-minute match Messi was shown a red card for unlucky athlete Bilbao forward Asaire Villalibre. Villalibre fell to the ground with Messi’s shot. Messi can be banned for 12 matches, while the Federation’s Competition Committee has banned only two.
It was Messi’s first red card to play Barcelona’s 753rd. The match referee stated in his report that Messi used too much force. Messi has been heavily criticized on social media.
