Maharashtra Day 2021: Learn about Maharashtra Day today, its history and the reason to celebrate it

Maharashtra Day 2021: Today is not only Majdoor Day but also Maharashtra Day and Gujarat Day. India’s two major states, Maharashtra and Gujarat celebrate May 1 as their foundation day. Both these states were part of the Bombay state at the time of Indian independence. On this day, this state of India was established as ‘Maharashtra’. Previously, Maharashtra and Gujarat had no separate entity. Both were part of a state bomb. At that time, Bombay was the most spoken Marathi and Gujarati in the state. Marathi and Gujarati speaking people were demanding a separate state for themselves. People of both languages were intensifying their movements day by day.

In fact, many states were created under the States Reorganization Act 1956. Under this Act, if the state of Karnataka was made for the Kannada speaking people, Telugu speakers got Andhra Pradesh. Similarly, Tamil Nadu became a state for Malayalam speakers and Kerala for Tamil speakers. But the Marathas and Gujaratis did not find separate states. There have been many agitations on this demand.

On May 1, 1960, the then Nehru government divided Bombay State into two states under the Bombay Reorganization Act 1960 – Maharashtra and Gujarat. There was also controversy over Bombay in both states. While most Marathas say that they should meet Bombay because most people speak Marathi, Gujarati people say Bombay. Bombay was eventually made the capital of Maharashtra.

To make Maharashtra Day special, the state government hosts many colorful events on May 1 every year. The Maharashtra government will hold a special parade to make the day special.
