Mahindra Defense Systems Limited (MDSL), the country’s leading automaker, and the country’s defense ministry have today signed an agreement to serve the Indian Army with 1,300 light-duty vehicles. The cost of these vehicles is estimated at Rs 1,056 crore and is projected to be met in the next four years.
These light specialist vehicles, based in Mahindra, will be manufactured by Mahindra Defense Systems Limited and are fully manufactured in India. These light vehicles are completely safe from small arms attacks. Being more agile, this vehicle is also able to easily support smaller independent units in the operating area.

“The Mahindra The Light Specialist Vehicle is a modern combat vehicle, and various combat units will be authorized to carry a medium machine gun, automatic grenade launcher and anti-tank guided missile,” the Ministry of Defense said in a statement.
The project will showcase India’s local manufacturing capabilities and will be a milestone in the Government’s Self-Help India and ‘Make in India’ initiative. Mahindra Defense President SP Shukla wrote on Twitter: “We are proud to develop and manufacture such the first local vehicle in India according to Indian Army standards.”
