Miranda House ‘prepares’ women to enter politics, begins a three-month training course

Miranda House College at Delhi University plans to launch a three-month certificate program to train young women who want to join politics at the state and national level from April. Principal Bijayalakshmi Nanda, who confirmed this, said the college is planning to start a course for interested students from the next academic session and that it will be the first college to do so.

Nanda said, “We are planning to launch a pilot course by April and the course will be offered to all interested students from the next academic session. This course will focus on training and capacity building for young women at all levels, from gram panchayats to urban municipalities.

Miranda House works on the curriculum, She Leeds, a week-long virtual leadership training program designed to support women who want to enter politics. The resources of the College function as partners and co-creators.

‘She Leeds’ is a project in collaboration with the Chevening Alumni Project Fund (CAPF) in collaboration with a non-governmental organization (NGO) Stree Shakti, The Parallel Force and the Indian School of Democracy (ISD). The first group of women leaders, currently run by women’s energy, will be held on March 8 at the India International Center in New Delhi.

We are planning to provide all the necessary training to young women who want to join politics at any level, ”Nanda said. Although the program is designed for individual classes, we are now planning to offer it in mixed (online and in-person) mode so that the colleges we have adopted in Rajasthan as part of the university’s Vidya Vistar program will take advantage of this. The college is currently working with experts to finalize the course and it will be discussed in a series of meetings beginning Monday, Nanda said.

Vrinda Karat, a Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader who graduated from college in 1966 and former alumna of Miranda House, welcomed the move. “As an alumnus, I am delighted to know that my old college is taking such an initiative. The whole aspect of women’s rights has to do with the rights of women in decision-making bodies. It is good to study.
