Modi cabinet approves Puducherry president’s rule after Congress collapse

After the Congress government collapsed in Puducherry, the Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved a proposal to impose the president’s rule. Earlier this week, Chief Minister Narayanasamy resigned before a credible vote and the Congress-led government in the central region collapsed. The proposal was approved at a Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar said after the meeting Narayanasamy-led government resigned after some ruling MLAs from Puducherry had split from the party. After the resignation of the chief minister, no one claimed that the government would form. After that, the Lieutenant Governor recommended the dissolution of the Assembly at Puducherry.

Javadekar said the proposal was approved by the Union Cabinet. This is followed by the dissolution of the Assembly after the approval of the President. He informed that the dates for the assembly elections in Puducherry are expected to be announced in the near future and that the Model Code of Conduct will be implemented thereafter.
