Prime Minister Narendra Modi handed over various development projects to the Union Territory of Puducherry today (Thursday) ahead of the forthcoming assembly elections. During this period, the Prime Minister laid the foundation for the Minor Harbor under the Sagarmala project and the construction of the National Highway 45-A into four lanes and the construction of a new campus of the Medical College Building in Karaikal District.
The Villupuram-Nagapattinam project under the National Highway 45-A consists of the 56-kilometer Saitanathapuram-Nagapattinam route. The project is estimated to cost Rs 2426 crore. It is estimated that a small port in Puducherry will cost Rs 44 crore.

The Government of India has made several efforts to improve rural and coastal connectivity. Agriculture sector across India will benefit from this. Farmers across India are showing innovation. It is our responsibility to make sure their products get the best market, and good roads help with that.
India needs world-class infrastructure to meet its development needs. The 4-lane foundation of the NH 45-A has been laid, which will increase connectivity and accelerate economic activity.
>> The various works we are inaugurating today will improve the lives of the people of Puducherry. I was delighted to inaugurate the reconstructed Mary building. The building has been remodeled into an old form while retaining the heritage.
In addition to these projects, the Prime Minister laid the foundation for the synthetic athletic track at the Indira Gandhi Sports Complex. The existing 400 meter cinder track surface is old and out of fashion. 7 crore for the project. The Prime Minister inaugurated the Blood Center at the Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research Center (JIPMAR). It was set up at a cost of Rs 28 crore.
He inaugurated a 100-bed girls’ hostel here in the Laspet area. Around Rs 12 crore has been allocated for women athletes under the auspices of the Sports Authority of India. The Prime Minister inaugurated the renovated Heritage Mary building on this occasion. The Mary building was built by the Franciscans and is now being renovated with the same architecture at a cost of about Rs 15 crore.
This is the Prime Minister’s second visit to Puducherry in the last three years. Earlier in 2018, he visited the Auroville International Project in nearby Villupuram district and addressed a public meeting. The visit of the Prime Minister comes at a time when the political climate of the state has completely changed.
V Narayanasamy resigned as chief minister on February 22 after the Congress-led state government came into the minority. President Ram Nath Kovind has accepted his resignation.
After his resignation, no political party claimed to form a government. The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved the proposal of President’s administration at Puducherry. The proposal will be dissolved here with the President accepting the proposal. Assembly elections in Puducherry will be held in April-May this year.
