Renewal of Chamoli disaster: Two more bodies recovered from tunnel, life-saving battle continues seven days later

Efforts are underway to rescue those trapped in the Tapovan power project tunnel following the disaster in Chamoli, Uttarakhand. Seven days have passed but the rescue team has not reached the people trapped inside yet. Meanwhile, early Sunday morning, the rescue team recovered two more corpses from the tunnel. In addition, 40 bodies have been recovered so far after the rain disaster.

Uttarakhand DGP Ashok Kumar said two corpses were seized from the side of the main tunnel in Tapovan (Chamoli) today. Uttarakhand police, SDRF and NDRF jawans are extracting the bodies. After the disaster on February 7, day and night operations were underway to save people trapped in the sun.

The debris was disturbed
There is a turning point inside the tunnel, called a tee point. All people are believed to be trapped there, but 44 meters of debris has to be removed to get there. The rescue team is removing more debris, which comes back. There are more problems than this. The NTPC general manager said the defense teams would be able to go up to 136 meters in the tunnel.

The parties held a barrage
A week later, for the first time, soldiers from the NDRF and SDRF tried to track down people who had barged into the river. Now efforts are underway to remove debris from the barrage and stop the flow of the river. Approach Road is being built from the left. Also, the attempt to remove the debris from the ish shiganga power project in Rainey village has intensified. According to DM Swati Bhadoria, the remains are also being removed from identified places based on local people’s information.

Only 13 people have been identified so far
Of the 40 bodies recovered after the disaster, 13 bodies have been identified so far. Meanwhile, 14 missing persons have been reported in Joshimath Kotwali. After the tragedy, local police, SDRF, fire service and FSL teams were involved in search, relief and DNA sampling after the disaster, DIG Nilesh Anand Bharani said.
