Serena Williams begins the Australian Open with a win, unilaterally defeating an opposition player

In the first round of the women’s singles event at the Australian Open on Monday, American Serena Williams won unilaterally. Serena made a strong comeback after falling behind in one match, winning 10 consecutive games on the first day of the tournament, beating Laura Siegmund 6–1, 6–1. Serena is vying for the 24th Women’s Singles Grand Slam title. During this match, Serena lost just nine points in her serve and scored 16 winners.

Serena’s older sister Venus Williams won her first Grand Slam match since 2019 when she defeated Kirsten Philippines 7-5, 6-2 at the 21st Australian Open. Forty-year-old Venus is the oldest female player in this year’s draw. He is one of only six players to participate in the Australian Open over the age of 40. Three-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka, who won the title in Melbourne two years ago, defeated Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 6–1, 6–2 in the first match at the Road Laver Arena.

Canada’s Rebecca Marino defeated Kimberly Birelli 6-6, 7-6 in a Grand Slam tournament for the first time in eight years. Marino was suffering from depression and severe leg injuries. In the men’s singles, 14th seed Milos Raonic defeated Federico Correa 6-3, 6-3, 6-2, while Reilly Opaleka of the United States defeated 18 Ace Lu Yen Sun 6-3, 7-6, 6-3.
