Twitter adds labels to the accounts of government agencies and leaders

Twitter says the label will be added from next week to identify the accounts of government leaders and affiliates. It tells people what they are seeing on the microblogging site and makes them “aware” of more information. Twitter said it will debut in Canada, Cuba, Ecuador, Egypt, Honduras, Indonesia, Iran, Italy, Japan, Saudi Arabia, Serbia, Spain, Thailand, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates from February 17. However, India’s name is not on the list.

In August last year, Twitter created two additional categories, expanding the account label. This included prominent government officials and government subsidiary media outlets. Added to this are the accounts of five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council (China, France, Russia, Britain and the United States).

Twitter said in a blog post on Thursday that “we will be expanding such labels from early February 17,” based on suggestions from various partners, including civic organizations, academia and other users. Twitter said the labels would apply to the personal accounts of heads of states in these countries.

It said the labels would apply to government-affiliated media outlets in countries that have these stages in the next phase. Furthermore, we will further expand the label to other countries and provide additional information. Twitter has been facing criticism over the past few weeks for posting inflammatory and misleading content and such accounts with regard to farmers’ performance.

The government has issued a stern warning to Twitter to be prepared to follow the country’s laws or take action. In a recent blog post, Twitter said the labels would be added to the checked accounts of key government officials, including foreign ministers, official spokespersons, heads of agencies and ambassadors.
