On the one hand, peasants have defied agrarian laws and invested in Delhi and its adjoining state borders. At the same time, many celebrities are coming out in support of them and the process of returning the award has begun. In this issue, Rai Singh Dhaliwal, a retired Commandant of the Punjab Home Guard, now in Patiala, Punjab, has announced that he will jointly return his presidential medal to protesting farmers.

Earlier on Thursday, Shiromani Akali Dal chief and former Punjab chief minister Prakash Singh Badal told us that he returned his Padma Vibhushanya award in support of farmers. The party’s Rajya Sabha MP Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa has announced that he will return his Padma Bhushan award in protest against the agrarian laws.

On the other hand, Gurbax Singh Sandhu, the former coach of the national boxing team, has said that he will return his Dronacharya title if the demands of farmers protesting against the new farming rules are not met. Let me tell you, if there is no definitive result of the peasant movement, this list may be longer.

Let me tell you that Badal wrote a three-page letter to President Ramanath Kovind, opposing agricultural laws. Badal condemned the police action on the farmers and announced his return of Padma Vibhushan. Badal wrote in the letter, ‘I am very poor, I have nothing else to sacrifice for the peasants, whatever the peasants may be. In such a situation, if there is insult to the farmers, then there is no benefit to having any kind of respect.
