A Dalit celebrating victory was killed in the aftermath of the civic polls in Gujarat. A Dalit man was killed on Tuesday after allegedly participating in the celebration of a Congress candidate’s triumph in Sanodar village of Bhavnagar district of Gujarat. The results of Sunday’s election for local bodies in the state were announced Tuesday.

The deceased has been identified as Amarbhai Boricha (50) and a resident of Sanodar in Gogha taluk, said Dinesh Kodiyattar, deputy superintendent of police, Bhavnagar SC / ST Cell. He said he died during treatment at the hospital. The deputy superintendent said the process of filing an FIR is ongoing.

Boricha’s daughter Nirmala, who was injured in the attack, told reporters that the procession of the victory celebration was led by Vanaraj Singh Gohil, whose wife Manisha Ghogha won the seat of Taluk Panchachat on a Congress ticket.

Nirmala said, ‘Our family is the only Dalit in the village. As the procession went on, stones were thrown and crowds entered our home and struck my father and family. Those people assaulted my father with a sword and that led to his death. I was hurt too.
