Legend has it that once his mother, the goddess Parvati, asked Ganesha to guard the entrance while she was bathing. However, Lord Shiva arrived at that moment and Ganesha stopped when he tried to enter. This angered Shiva and he beheaded Ganesha.
Seeing this Parvati Devi was heartbroken, Shiva led her to point to him for the head of a creature to replace the severed head of the Ganesha you won. They found a cattle elephant head and thus Ganesha came back to life and later named Lord Shiva Ganapati.
It is believed that Ganesha was born in the afternoon, so according to Vedic astrology the most favorable time to worship Ganesha is in the afternoon. This year’s celebrations will begin on August 22nd.
