Mangalore: Renowned cardiologist Dr. Anand Veeranna Shetty passed away at his residence on Saturday evening, his family sources said.

He was 85 years old. The deceased is survived by his wife Chandra and two daughters, one son.

Dr. AV Shetty, a native of Kundapur, was renowned as a renowned physician in Dakshina Kannada district and the first cardiologist in the district. The ‘Prince of Wales’ Gold Medal from the University of Mumbai. The state’s first open-heart surgery, held at the Government Wenlock Hospital in Mangalore, was led by Shetty.

Shetty studied at the Royal College of Physicians in Edinburgh in 1962 and graduated from the MRCP in 1963 and the FRCP in 1974. He retired after 25 years as a professor of cardiology at Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore. Father Muller served as head of the cardiology department at the hospital and also worked as a consultant at Temple Street on Car Street.

Shetty was one of the oldest members of the Rotary Club of Mangalore and was for some time its president. He was a member of Freemasons and served as Honorary Secretary of Mangalore Club.

He served as the President of the Mangalore Branch of the Indian Medical Association. He was the Chairman of the Association of Physicians of India, Dakshina Kannada District from 1989-1993. He was the founder trustee of the Sri Gopalakrishna Temple in Shakti Nagar and is an advisor to the Shakti Education Trust. The deceased is survived by his wife Chandra Shetty, two daughters and one son.
