Learn how practical Mercedes-Benz GLA is in our review

Today we bring you the luxury car Mercedes Benz GLA review. The series has been quite successful for the company. Between 2014 and 2019, only 10% of Mercedes-Benz India sales were from GLA. The company brought its second-generation model back in May. It is taller than before, has increased space and now it has an SUV-like feel. But, for those who want to buy it, Mercedes-Benz GLA can be very practical, as we know today in this review.

External

As soon as you see the front design of the car, you will realize that it is a Mercedes SUV. It gets a grille like the rest of the company’s vehicles, with a large Mercedes logo and chrome pinheads. It has LED high performance headlamps with DRL. The side profile receives 19-inch 5-spoke alloy wheels, turn indicators in ORVMs, large window glasses and chrome.

On the back, you are given LED taillights that come in a two-piece design. It gets the rear viper, dual exhaust, variant name and Mercedes logo in the middle. You can open its tailgate with the key or the button on the diver-side door. In the GLA you get 435 liters of boot space. The specialty is that it can be electrically turned off. Speaking of dimensions, its length is 4436mm, width 2020mm, height 1611mm and wheelbase 2729mm.

Internal

The interior of the car is really attractive. As soon as you see it from the inside, you start to get a feeling of luxury in the car. It has a 10.25-inch touchscreen display. It also supports voice support in addition to Android Auto and Apple Car Play. You can control this display in three ways. You can use it as a touchscreen, as well as a track pad for it, and in Mercedes, it’s called a command system. The third way is that you can manage it through the controls on the left side of the steering.

It has a full digital instrument cluster which I personally find very beautiful. You can customize it according to yourself. The steering itself has its controls on the right. The tubular air curves offered on the inside make the car more comfortable. Another interesting thing I found was the 64-color ambient lighting, which looks pretty good at night. You can adjust its colors according to your choice.

If you have never been a Mercedes user before, it may take time to get accustomed to its functions. For example, you can find seat adjustment controls on the door. It should also be noted that the seat adjustment facility is available for both driver and co-passengers. Second, the gear shifter is not provided on the center console, but on the right side of the steering. Next to it you will find the headlight control knob. On the left side of the steering, you get controls for the turn indicator and the wipers.

Speaking of other features, you are given connected car technology, wireless charging, panoramic sunroof, dual-zone climate controls, reading lights, front handrest with large storage and very comfortable seating. The IRVM it has, it looks a little simpler in appearance. It could have been designed a little better. Another thing is that the car has been provided with C-type ports for mobile charging, with the USB charging port missing.

In the previous generation GLA, the second raw space was quite crowded. But this time you will have no complaints. It gets plenty of legroom and headroom. The lower thigh support is also good. You can also place your feet under the front seat. For your comfort, it gets the rear handrest with cup holders, AC vents, charging ports and sun roof. The special is that you can move the rear seats forward, which increases the boot space. However, it is better if rear seat passengers are given a separate weather zone.

Engine and performance

The new GLA is powered by a 1.3-liter turbo petrol and 2.0-liter diesel engines controlled by the A-Class Limousine. The petrol engine produces 165 PS of power and 250 Nm of torque. At the same time, the diesel engine has 190 PS of power and 400 Nm of peak torque. We are running the diesel variant available on the 220D4Matic variant. It comes with an 8-speed dual clutch transmission (DCT).

It comes in four driving modes – Eco, Comfort, Sport and Individual. You get more mileage in Eco mode, but Sports Mode for better quick response. Comfort mode is a mix of both. Its DCT Gear Box gives you better mileage and better performance. At the same time, if you want to do a gear shift, paddle shifters are also available. Not only is it very comfortable to drive, you also get different confidence. The suspension setup also does its job well. Overall, driving is fun.

Our judgment

It is an entry level Mercedes Benz, offering space and comfort with stylish interiors and a powerful engine. It’s fun to drive, and the interior quality of the interior is even better. However, some features are missing, such as ventilated seats, separate climate control for the rear passenger and better boot space. However, if your budget is around Rs 50 lakh and you are looking for a compact luxury SUV, the new Mercedes GLA is the best option.
