Rape cases of SC and ST women increase

MysoreA total of 4,162 cases of rape and murder of a Dalit woman in Hathras in Uttar Pradesh have been reported from the state, according to Karnataka State Police sources. In the last three years, there have been reported cases of criminal acts, including rape and murder, against the Dalit community in the state.

In 2018, the number of rape cases against women belonging to the SC / ST community was 130, an increase of 61.5% in just one year. In 2019, around 210 such cases were reported at various police stations. Meanwhile, the number of cases registered under the SC and ST (Violence Prevention Act 1989) is 1,219 in 2018, 1,187 in 2019 and 899 as of August 31, 2020.

428 rape cases and 263 murder cases against SC / ST women in Karnataka have been recorded from January 2018 to August 31, 2020, of which all accused are of other castes. While crime has fallen in the state amid the Corona epidemic and lockdown, available data says the state has recorded 88 rape and 45 murder cases in the past eight months. Thus, there has not been much improvement or variation in atrocities on SC / STs.

“It is regrettable that the crimes against the SC / ST are not handled properly. I think the police and public prosecutors have failed to collect the necessary evidence and the evidence is poor. In most cases, the police file a ‘B’ report, which indirectly triggers further incidents. “The State Convener of the SC and ST Monitoring and Strengthening (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, P Yashodha said,”

He noted, “Most districts do not hold District Vigilance and Monitoring Committee meetings, which are mandatory every four months.
