Scientists expressed their shock over the Chamoli catastrophe – the water sank due to the weakening of the ice rocks!

In Chamoli, Uttarakhand, many people have died and floods caused by glacier breakdown have left many lives and property dead. After the accident, the causes are now being discovered. Scientists believe flooding in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand may have created a weaker zone there, as the massive ice sheet weakened, causing it to freeze for years and cause sudden flooding.

Scientists at the Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology (WIHG) initially expressed this fear. He said the snow brought mud and snow mounds with him during the rock fall. This collision will probably cause heat, which can cause flooding. Agency scientists surveyed the area by helicopter to get a clue about the causes of the devastating flood.

WIHG Director Kalchand San said ice ges shimunis were watering the river Ganga in the Dhauli Ganga at the time of the incident. That said, there is a direct slope in the area. They believe the ice may have been weakened by freezing and snowfall. This can sometimes lead to weak zones and frictional growth. Due to the weakening of the ice, ice and snow have fallen, causing sudden flooding, he said. The steep slope in the mountains of the region increased the intensity of the fall of the ice.

Two WIHG teams went to Joshimath on Monday to find out the cause of the incident. These teams have five glaciers. Himalayan Environment and Geology is taught at the Institute of Science and Technology (DST). San said the initial report will be sent to DST.
