Sushil Kumar’s mother has reached the Delhi High Court to stop media coverage

NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court on Thursday accepted an application seeking to withhold a media inquiry into the case of Olympic medalist wrestler Sushil Kumar, who was arrested for the murder of wrestler Sagar. In this application, the court has sought to provide guidance for media reporting of criminal cases.

Chief Justice D.N. Justice Patel and Justice Jyoti Singh have agreed to hear the petition filed by wrestler Sushil’s mother. The petition will be heard on Friday, May 28, the bench said. A petition has been filed by a law student of the mother of accused Sushil Kumar.

Delhi Police has recorded 8 eyewitness statements, and questions have been asked about Sushil

The petitioner said that the mother of the accused had agreed to submit the application. The petition said the baseless facts of the case were being shown in the media and the media was conducting its own inquiry into the case before the trial hearing began. Police are still investigating the case, but the media is showing Sushil Kumar as the killer, the petition said.

In a lawsuit filed against Sushil Kumar and others at Model Town Police Station, the media organizations have sought a ban on broadcasting of unfounded news and appealed to the central government to set guidelines for media coverage. It is also seeking an investigation into how facts pertaining to the case are coming to the media. The petition stated that disclosure of facts related to the investigation was a violation of the accused’s rights.

The petition states that Sushil has won many national championships, including the Olympics, and has brought award winners to the country, but the media has described him as guilty on the basis of unfounded facts.
