Mother’s Day History

Mother’s Day was first celebrated in the United States, and in 1908 a woman named Mother Jarvis wanted to commemorate Mother’s Day as a recognized holiday in honor of her mother, Ann Reese Jarvis, who died three years ago.

Mother had a memorial to her mother at St. Andrews Methodist Church in West Virginia – now the International Mother’s Day Church. Anna Jarvis wanted to honor her mother because she believed that a mother “did more for you than anyone else in the world.”
