Amid rising petrol and diesel prices, the competition between the country’s two leading carmakers, Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai, will be tough on CNG cars. Both companies are looking to increase sales of CNG vehicles, especially entry-level vehicles. Maruti Suzuki plans to produce 250,000 CNG vehicles (60 per cent more than FY21) in the current financial year. At the same time, Hyundai expects sales of CNG models to triple this year (35,000 units).
Shashank Srivastava, Executive Director (Marketing & Sales) of Maruti Suzuki, said: “With petrol and diesel prices rising and CNG availability improving, demand for CNG vehicles has increased rapidly.” Maruti Suzuki has a total of 8 CNG vehicles, including Alto, S-Presso, Celerio, WagonR, Ertiga, Eco and Dzire. In the coming time, the company plans to offer CNG in all its smaller models.

Maruti Suzuki’s rival Hyundai also expects CNG sales to rise. Hoodie currently has CNG options available in three models – ura ra, santro and neos. Speaking to ET, Hyundai Motor India (HMIL) Director (Marketing and Sales) Tarun Garg expects the company’s CNG sales to grow to about 35,000 units by the year 2021 Garg said Hyundai will focus on petrol and CNG in smaller vehicles, offering petrol and diesel options for its SUVs.

The price of a petrol / diesel vehicle in Delhi is Rs 4-4.10 per km, while the cost of a CNG vehicle is Rs 1.60-1.70 per km. Petrol and diesel prices in the country are on an all-time high.
