Cariappa’s [then a Lieutenant General] taking over as the first Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army from General Fransis Bucher , the last British Commander-in-Chief of India, on 15th January 1949.
Indian Army Day 2022 Significance
First, the Indian Army was formed on April 1, 1895 under British rule and became known as the British Indian Army. It was only on January 15, 1949, after India gained independence in 1947, that the country became its first Indian leader.
Lieutenant General KM Cariappa took over as Commander of the Indian Army in 1949 from General Francis Butcher, the last British Commander in India. The transfer of power from the British to India marks an important moment in Indian history and is celebrated as Army Day. This day also honors the soldiers who sacrificed their lives for the country.
