Mukherjee inaugurated the first phase of the solarisation project on the president’s estate to reduce the carbon footprint and make the estate more powerful. Seven Upper Solar Roof Solar Panels were installed under the project with an investment of Rs 2.23 crore. Speaking at the inauguration, Mukherjee said: “This is the future course we are establishing today. It is a pleasant occasion for me to be part of this initiative aimed at generating solar energy. “We must conserve energy so that those in need get their power,” he said. Social and cultural activities

Mukherjee served as President of the Nikhil Bharat Banga Sahitya Sammelan from 1995 to 2001 and then from 2004 to 2012. He was also the President of the Ravindra Bharati Society.
From 2006 to 2012, he served as president of the Council of Indian Statistical Institute.
He was Chairman of the Planning Board of the Asiatic Society of Kolkata from 1984 to 1986, 1992 to 1996 and from 2004 to 2012.
He was a trustee of the Bangiya Sahitya Council from 1984 to 1990. He also served as a trustee of Bidhan Memorial Trust in Kolkata from 1998 to June 2012.
