Born on 29 January 1930 in Hisar, Haryana, Jasraj was related to the Mewati Gharana. is. He was raised by his elder brother Pandit Maniram after losing his father at the age of just four. Jasraj has taught music in India, Canada and the US. He went on to sing only for Guinchuni films in Bollywood, the first of which was for V Shantaram’s film ‘Girl Sahayardi Ki’, in which he sang Raag Ahir Bhairav as a playback singer. It was composed by Vasant Desai. His second song was for the 1975 film Birbal My Brother. It was composed by Shyam Prabhakar. Jugalbandi was heard in the raja Malakon of Jasraj and Bhimsen Joshi. He then sang a romantic song for the film 1920. The song was composed by Adnan Sami.
He once said in an interview to the BBC that it is very difficult to say how many breaths to take, how many programs to do. In this interview, he even said that he has no contribution in the field of music. He said that where I sing, I did nothing. I am just a medium. Jasraj, who started training as a singer at the age of just 14, was also associated with radio for many years. He then performed his first stage as a singer at the age of 22. He did many new experiments in meditation singing. Jasraj devised a novel form of Jugalbandi, called ‘Jasrangi’, in the style of the ancient system of ‘fainting’ which consists of a male and a female singer who sing different ragas at one time . Jasraj is also remembered as popularizing semi-classical music styles.
