Nepal’s Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli last week told Chinese Ambassador Hu Yankee that he was able to handle the challenges within his party without the help of other countries.
Officials, in anonymity, said Oli’s remarks may have been inspired by the events of his Nepal Communist Party (NCP). Former Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahl-led party faction opposes ‘Prachara’ Oli. HT has reportedly told his supporters that he was ready to split the party. China is working to avoid this. China has previously played a pacifist role in the NCP.
The Prime Minister’s stance has changed when he is making united efforts to improve relations with New Delhi and to discuss differences between the two countries on Kalapani, Limpiyadhura and Lipulekh. PM Oli’s behavior change could be considered as an attempt to reclaim the nationalist agenda that was the main basis of his campaign before his victory in 2018, the Ambassador to Nepal in India said.
Significantly, Chinese Defense Minister General Wei Feng is visiting Nepal over the weekend and is expected to hold some talks on NCP affairs. “General Wee will spend four hours at the army headquarters,” a Kathmandu diplomat said.
