Uma Riyaz Khan was born in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India, to Kamesh and Kamala Kamesh. Her father was a music director in the film industry, and her mother was a well-known actress. She completed her graduation from an undisclosed college. During her school days, Uma was a state-level athlete in the 100 meters and javelin throw. She was also a trained classical dancer but later switched to salsa and other Latin American dance forms.

In 2003, Uma played the role of Mehrunnissa in the critically acclaimed Tamil movie “Anbe Sivam.” She also acted in the Tamil movie “Kanavu Meipada Vendum” in 2004. However, Uma Riyaz Khan got her breakthrough role in the movie “Mouna Guru,” where she portrayed the role of Inspector Palaniammal.
